Diablo 2: question about transfering diablo 2 characters?

so i had the regular diablo 2 and my lv 50 amazon was on it. i just got the expansion. the account wasnt online so i do i convert the amazon to expansion. i tried playing the expansion and nobody showed up. and now i cant even play the regular diablo 2. plz help
