What exactly is Prestige Mode in CoD Black Ops?

i'm currently a level 41, so once i reach 50 can i enter prestige? and is it really worth it? i heard that all the stuff you've unlocked is once again locked. why the hell would anyone enter prestige if they know all that is gonna happen??
